If I had to recommend one, and only one, video game for a person to play it would be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game is a great RPG, if not the best. The story is not the simple copy paste that so many RPGs are these days. The story in this game makes you care and connect with the characters. From beginning to end, the player is held captive to the great writing of the golden days of Bioware. All of this with the fact that you, the player, choose which way the story progresses. Do you go the golden paragon of virtue following the Light Side and promoting Justice, or do you torture and coerce the people you meet for money and power? These are not empty choices, but change the outcome of the story. The second time I played through the game I did things different than my first play through, and boy was I surprised after what i thought I new how the game would progress. If you have not played this game buy it and play it. It will change the way you view all games, and become the new standard by which you measure games.
KOTOR is the greatest Star Wars game ever made. It's a choose your own adventure where your actions and choices determine your story and ending, and what the other characters think of you. It's possible to not even get all the playable characters in a single playthrough or lose them based on your decisions. Though I didn't see the plot twist in this game coming on my first playthrough, when you think back on the game as a whole, it's actually pretty obvious from the outset. The game is open world and has numerous planets and dozens of missions to complete, each of which can be finished in multiple ways. Everything you buy and equip your character with appears on screen so you see what you actually bought, unlike most games where it doesn't matter. The story and characters are amazing. The graphics are typical for Star Wars. The worlds are very creative and detailed, but there's a lot of wasted space and open areas with nothing going on. The battle system is fun, but turn based. It would have made for a better action based game rather than just inputting commands and waiting for your on screen character to execute them. There's never a dull moment in this game, even when you are just walking across the large, sometimes barren landscapes. Perhaps one day Disney will make the third KOTOR that we have always wanted and finally close down that massive cliffhanger from KOTOR 2. For now though, at least we have the highly replayable KOTOR and its lesser sequel.
KotOR is the ultimate Star Wars experience in RPG form. It has great combat for all disciplines in Star Wars. It has great character progression with plenty of options for all playstyles. It has great exploration going to familiar planets we know and love to exploring new territory. It also happens to have one of the greatest stories in plot twists in gaming. This is the birth of Revan and the birth of BioWare as a AAA developer. Even after 13 years, this game still holds up fairly well. It is truly a timeless classic that any fan of BioWare or Star Wars needs to play. Mass Effect would not exist without this game.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an amazing game that is a must-play for any Star Wars fan! This is an older game, so the graphics are a bit dated, but the gameplay is still great. Also, the story is beautifully written and engaging, with meaningful choices and consequences for your actions.
This is one game that every SW fans needs to play. For that matter, it's a game that every RPG fan needs to play. While the graphics and combat feel dated now, the story and feel for the universe still shines. There are so many interactions between characters you might miss in a single play-through, so definitely go through it all multiple times. It can start to feel a little to binary in its choices like most BioWare games (KOTOR II really improves on being more grey than strictly black and white in its choices). It's still a classic, though. You will never forget THAT twist. This game gives a more intimate and in-depth look at the SW universe than any other game! I'm not a fan of MMOs so I haven't tried Old Republic. I just keep waiting for BioWare to make another single-player SW RPG. One can dream, I guess.
