Game description

The Dwarves is a fantasy role-playing game with a strong story and tactically challenging real-time battles. 15 playable heroes, each with individual skills, are to be deployed cleverly. Take on superior numbers of orcs, ogres, älfs, bögnilim, zombies, dark mages and many more foes, to give them the low-down.

Based on the bestselling novel “The Dwarves” by Markus Heitz you’ll experience a fascinating tale revolving around the coolest fantasy race ever: The Dwarves!

Tactical real-time battles: You’re fighting hundreds of foes with just a handfull of heroes. You can pause anytime to tactically plan the next smart move.

Crowd Combat: All creatures on the battlefield are rendered with physical complexity – that’s why the battles feel especially dynamic and “real”, and enabling a lot of tactical finesse.

Captivating story: Join the dwarf Tungdil on his adventurous journey across Girdlegard.

Explore the world: Uncover secrets, learn more about the game world and its inhabitants, and solve optional puzzles.

Delve into the world map: Girdlegard ranges from snow-covered summits to shimmering deserts. You can move freely on the world map, meet numerous characters, and experience adventures. But beware: A lot of your actions on the world map have far-reaching consequences!

Dwarves! Finally the coolest fantasy people are in the spotlight. The NPC days of the bearded axe-wielders are over – the age of the dwarves has come!

Fun gameplay and good characters but short and some technical problems

The Dwarves is a Kickstarter funded RPG with a real time pause battle system and a story based on a series of books by the same name. The game is spent in moments of explorations and dialogue with different lines you can pick from, an overworld map that allows you to travel to different locations, and battles that often pit your small group of dwarves against large groups of enemies. The conversation options can effect certain scenes, or you amount of money, and there are events and sidequests you can choose to interact with or ignore but the main plot will remain the same as it sticks to the books. Your actions can impact settlements on the map and certain characters. The game's battles are real time with pause and have your small group of dwarves facing huge groups of enemies in chaotic battles. Each of your characters can take three abilities into battle that they can use with action points, you have access to a lot of characters but can only take four of them into a fight. Different characters and abilities can be good against different kinds of enemies as you will fight small and weak orcs, more heavily armored opponents, and large giants. Sometimes you might get AI controlled allies fighting with you but you will always have to rely on strategic positioning, good use of AoE abilities, and taking advantage of the terrain to do things like knock enemies off of cliffs. Battle objectives can also be varied depending on what is going on in the story. There are some issues with the combat, the movement doesn't always feel accurate which makes the game having friendly fire more of a problem and the camera can be a big problem when there are buildings, trees, or other higher up parts of the environment blocking your view of the character you are controlling. The game doesn't have much in the way of loot or character customization, other than choosing the abilities you want to bring into battle. There are also some technical issues but they tend to happen more during cutscenes rather than in battle. The story is enjoyable and the characters are good and well acted, having a focus on dwarves is also a nice change, unfortunately the game is quite short only being about 8-10 hours long. When the game begins things seem to progress well with their being different things to do and a good build up for the story and characters, as the game does on it starts to feel rushed as you quickly move from event to event followed by a sudden ending.

A kind of The Banner Saga + The Lords of the Rings

The plot in the game is absolutely straightforward and strictly tied to the plot of the book. I had previously read all the books in the series and therefore storyline of the game as it is not exciting, the feeling that you read the book for the second time, but this is for me. Graphics still quite beautiful. The game works well on the highest setting. Implementation of inventory, role-playing component (characters skills) and loot are weak. Fights are implemented in the style of real-time strategy with the ability to pause and assignment of orders to the units. The camera "attached" to the selected units have the ability to distance, zoom, and rotate, but can't move to the edge of the screen. Because of this, the management is not very convenient.
