The graphics are a bit "old school"(perhaps an understatement) but if you can overlook that aspect of it, the gameplay and story itself is quite solid and true to the style of such classic games, they make up for the graphical quality of the game. These games, I'd boldly claim, essentially define the genre of stealth gameplay. Combat is usually not recommended and in fact, compared to your arsenal of stealth tools, probably not a good first or even second choice(the second choice being to just run and hide). I'm pretty sure Thief was even responsible for inspiring the stealth of various games, considering how the sort of design they had in place that based your stealth off factors like visibility and sound. If you're used to modern games, it may take some getting used to(and may even seem unforgiving), but once you manage the mechanics, you'll find a uniquely entertaining game worth playing.
While Thief Gold/Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age are stealth game genre greatness and worth playing to this very day, Thief 3/Deadly Shadows is still good game worth giving a try, just not as good as previous 2. On its own, though, it is still excellent. As for Thief reboot, sadly, is painful disappointment, because there is nothing that made the series fun and reboot itself was completely unnecessary and killed entire lore of the great series. For this price, though, if you never played the series, it is worth it, because you get 3 great games and latest one, which is still a curious piece of history, just not a great game.
Thief, and thief 2 are classics. You should play them, if old graphics don't scare you, and you like deep stories, and big, explore able maps. Deadly shadows is weird, with it's open World like design, but i still recommend it, but for me personally, losing the sword for a knife was a bad move, especially since it works almost exactly the some. Other then that, it's a great game, no complaints from me. Now, the last game.... If you absolutely have to have every game in the series, this package is for you, but in my opinion, the fourth game is the reason, we will never likely to get a 5th one. It's just awful. The first 3 is worth 30 bucks though any time.
Really, there's little more to be said - the Thief series has lasted this long because it was excellent. Coming back to it today, it looks dated, but it still plays pretty damned well. Don't expect these to be like the new Thief game - that is all style with almost no substance, to a direct contrast with the classics. If you have any interest in seeing where your favorite games came from, check out the original Thief series. It's a slice of history and quite entertaining in its own right.
The thief series is a group of stealth first person games. They've always succeeded at immersion you have. The first person view puts you right in the action. Sneaking feels more tense, combat is more visceral and looting just feels right. The game's mechanics are complex and its satisfying once you've figured them out. The environment can be a help or a detriment depending on if you know whether to use it. The Gothic storytelling is fun , if not particularly deep , but the atmosphere is excellent.
