Marvel’s Midnight Suns – What’s The Story?
Developed by Firaxis Games, Marvel’s Midnight Suns blends RPG elements, turn-based combat and deck building mechanics to create a wholly unique effort that is loosely based on the Marvel Midnight Sons comic series which ran from December 1993 through to August 1994. Envisioning a much darker setting than the sort which the Marvel property usually deals in, Marvel’s Midnight Suns tells the story of the brilliantly named Hydra scientist Doctor Faustus who uses dark magic and occult rituals to summon the Mother of Demons, Lilith to wreak havoc on the Earth.
To prevent this calamity from coming to pass, Marvel’s Midnight Suns casts players as the Hunter, an entirely unique Marvel superhero conceived for Midnight Suns. Teaming up with notable Marvel superheroes such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and more, the Hunter and their new group of super-powered friends must face down the threat of Lilith and her band of fallen enforcers which include established Marvel super-villains Venom, Red Hulk and more.

How Do The Turn-Based And Card Battle Elements Work?
Though Marvel’s Midnight Suns and the XCOM series share a turn-based strategy mechanism, it’s really there that the similarities end, as Marvel’s Midnight Suns leverages cards that must be drawn from a randomly shuffled pool each turn, rather than a fixed set of actions to choose from. The cards that you’ll use in Marvel’s Midnight Suns not only boast the expected defensive and offensive commands, in addition to the usual smattering of support functions such as healing, protection and so on, but some will also allow players to unleash special abilities that are unique to the superhero that is currently in use.
Whether that’s Wolverine’s berserker rage or Iron Man’s repulsor blast, the card system that Firaxis has employed here not only provides a fresh layer strategy to the proceedings, but also serves to reinforce the uniqueness of each superhero too. In another pair of sizable departures from the XCOM games, not only is character movement no longer locked to a grid-based system in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, but the whole chance-to-hit mechanic has also been done away with. Certainly the latter makes a great deal of sense considering we’re talking about superheroes with superhuman abilities here, rather than Private Dippy Dave and his paltry chance to hit a target thirty metres away with a pop-gun.
RPG And Hub Elements – How Do They Work?
Rather than just a series of turn-based battles interlinked by hub base bits, Marvel’s Midnight Suns makes the most of the characters and evocative setting of its comic book source material. When you’re not scrapping with Lilith and her not-so band of merry folks you’ll be kicking back at the Abbey, which on a surface level at least us Marvel’s Midnight Suns take on the base that you would have in the XCOM games.
Much like the turn-based combat seen elsewhere however, Marvel’s Midnight Suns couldn’t otherwise be more different in this regard if it tried. Not only is the Abbey a fully explorable environment that provides a means for players to manage their various cards, get stuck into a bit of crafting and change their costumes, it also offers up an opportunity for the Hunter to engage in some dialogue tree driven chatter with other Marvel superheroes that are lurking around the place, not only improving (or potentially worsening) your relationship with those characters, but also allowing you to gain some crucial lore into the bargain.
