Nintendo are bringing back all the greats right now. Hot off the heels of the brilliant Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy remasters, a brand new Super Mario 3D World is releasing today on the Nintendo Switch. It’s not just a simple remaster, however, as a whole new game mode titled Bowser’s Fury will be included, seeing you face off against Fury Bowser in a quest to stop a tide of destruction.
As always in a Nintendo game, you’ll be playing as or alongside a huge roster of brilliant and colourful characters. Here’s all the characters, both old and new, included in this deluxe edition of Super Mario 3D World, called Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
Mario
Everyone’s favourite Italian plumber is back, exploring the Sprixie Kingdom and experiencing brand new abilities such as turning into Cat Mario. Mario is the default character in Super Mario 3D World, an all-rounder with balanced abilities.
Luigi
The year of Luigi never ended, not whilst there’s the option of a playable Luigi to choose from in games. The taller, greener brother of Mario has a higher jump than any of the other characters but a slower delay when sprinting.
Peach
One of the better things about modern Mario games is the change in Princess Peach. No longer a damsel in distress, she’s fighting and jumping alongside her plumber pals. In Super Mario 3D World you can choose Peach from the start. She starts sprinting quicker than anyone else and can float when jumping, but her max run speed is the lowest.
Toad
The final Super Mario 3D World character you can pick at the start, Toad is a staple ally for the Mario brothers throughout most of their adventures. With the fastest run speed he’s a nippy little mushroom, but his fall speed is faster and the delay when sprinting is longer than anyone else’s.
Rosalina
After you finish World-2, Super Galaxy, you’ll unblock a brand new character. Rosalina protects the entire cosmos and has an array of cosmic powers to call upon. In Super Mario 3D World she can use spin attacks and double jumps. She also ties with Peach for the fastest sprint delay. The downsides are her run, which is as slow as Peach’s, and her spin attack disappears when she’s using a power-up.
Captain Toad
The final playable character in the standard Super Mario 3D World is Captain Toad, available only in Captain Toad’s Adventures. This floating fungus has an incredibly fast sprint delay, but absolutely cannot jump.
Bowser Jr.
Bowser Jr. appears as a playable character in the Bowser’s Fury mode, making Bowser Jr. a brand new Super Mario 3D World character. You’ll see him in his Junior Clown Car, armed with a Magic Paintbrush which he can use to attack enemies or make power-ups appear. By default he’s controlled by the AI, but a second player can hop into the driving seat.
Bowser
Of course, no Mario game is complete without Bowser. You won’t get to play as Bowser but with the Bowser’s Fury mode you’ll see much more of this reptilian foe, as he powers up into a colossal Fury Bowser that can wreak havoc throughout the world.
That’s all the playable and major characters present in the new Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury release. Who’s your favourite? Head over to our Community Forum and have your say.
