Tokyo Game Show 2021 has begun, bringing a slew of hot and spicy gaming news and announcements!
For twenty-five years, TGS has been a huge celebration of gaming held in the city of Chiba, and 2021 is no different. This year we’re expecting to see announcements from big names like Konami, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Xbox, and many more.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Details
We kick off our Tokyo Game Show Day 1 roundup with a tonne of new information for the new Monster Hunter Rise expansion. Sunbreak will add new challengers for seasoned veterans, a new hub to explore, Master Ranks for quests and a load of brand new monsters, including some returning from previous games. Sunbreak will be released in Summer 2022.
Monster Hunter Rise coming to PC
Finally, PC players will be able to get their hands on Monster Hunter Rise! After the success of Monster Hunter World, it seems the PC is a natural fit for this series. The PC version will be released in January 2022 and will come with enhancements such as 4K support, hi-res textures, uncapped frame rates, voice chat, new controls and ultrawide support.
Monster Hunter Rise Reveals Sonic, Ghosts ‘n Goblins Collaboration
In addition to everything else coming to Monster Hunter Rise, we also have some more details about upcoming collaborations with Sonic and Ghosts ‘n Goblins. The latter will arrive on 29th October 2021 and will feature Sir Arthur. There isn’t much info about the Sonic collaboration just yet, but it’ll be hitting Monster Hunter Rise sometime in November.
Xbox Commits to Increasing Lineup of Japanese Games
Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, said that the company is working “every single day to increase our line-up of Japanese games”. Speaking during the Xbox Show during TGS 2021, he stated “We’re working with Japanese publishers every single day to increase our line-up of Japanese games on Xbox. We know it’s really important to fans and customers on Xbox.”
Scarlet Nexus Heading to Xbox Game Pass
In addition to a few other games like Ai: The Somnium Files and Mighty Goose, Scarlet Nexus is being added to Xbox Game Pass. In fact, by the time you read this they will already be there!
Bethesda Games to be Localised for Japan
Redfall from Bethesda’s Arkane Studios and Starfield will both be localised for Japanese audiences, Todd Howard revealed during the Xbox Livestream. Apparently this will be the largest translation ever for the company, with “over 300 actors and 150,000 lines of dialogue”.
Isla Comes to King of Fighters XV
A brand new character is coming to King of Fighters XV. Named Isla, they’re a rival to Shun’ei who KoF veterans will recognise from King of Fighters XIV. She brings street style and a pair of purple floating hands to the brawl. King of Fighters XV is set for a 17th February 2022 release date.
Xbox-Only Demo for SWERY’s The Good Life
As of 30th September, Xbox players will be able to get their hands on an exclusive demo of the long-awaited game ahead of its 15th October launch date. It’s a slice of life simulator with the added bonus of being able to transform into a cat or dog which, let’s face it, is what we’re all looking for out of life.
Eternal Return gets Release Date on Xbox
This mashup of survival game, MOBA, and Battle Royale will be available to play on Xbox from 19th October, 2021. To celebrate, there’s also a brand new trailer showing off more of the action.
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin gets Release Date
A new story trailer dropped for this Final Fantasy 1 spinoff, showing more of the main character – Jack – who appears to be related to Garland from the first Final Fantasy game. This trailer also announced that the game will be launching on March the 18th, 2022. However, you’ll be able to play a second demo on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S from today, which shows off the game’s multiplayer features.
Dungeon Encounters Announced
During Square Enix’s presentation for TGS 2021 they announced a brand-new dungeon exploration RPG called Dungeon Encounters, along with a release date of 14th October 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. This RPG is a departure from the traditional JRPG format, with players proceeding along a line of squares, with encounters along the way. Frankly, it looks incredibly interesting – we can’t wait to hear more!
First Gameplay Trailer for Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising
Also during Tokyo Game Show 2021, 505 Games announced a deeper look at Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. This 2.5D action platformer sees you able to switch between a roster of characters, chaining together their attacks to deal colossal damage to opponents. The trailer showed off a little more of the game’s world, along with some bosses, letting us know what we’re in for.
