New school of magic – Rune Magic
The new race, the Vikings, bring a new magic to Darion. The racial feature allows the Vikings to use one of the three Runes – at the beginning of each turn. The Runes are chosen randomly. The Rune affects what kind of buff a unit will get for this turn. It might be an additional action point upon the turn completion, damage or a defense increase.
Rune magic spells allow changing the number of runes a unit has, hence increasing the number of turns the Vikings get rune bonuses. Vice versa, using all the runes of a unit to gain immediate effects such as restoring the hero’s mana or rage, cursing an enemy unit or blessing a friendly one.
The Rune Magic School also has cold damage spells (a new type of damage).
Olaf’s gorgeous companions, the divine maidens of Valkyrie, combine the abilities of the usual companions from the previous King’s Bounty games and Spirits of Rage from King’s Bounty: The Legend.
Unlike the previous games the player will be travelling with several companions at the same time, from one Valkyrie in the beginning of the game to all five of them towards the middle of the game.
Each new companion will give the player certain passive bonuses to their stats (e.g. +10 to rage or +5 to attack) and have special abilities which can be chosen from the dialog (e.g. Mysta the Valkyrie can resurrect fallen warriors after the next battle, if asked beforehand). Such abilities can be used only once per several battles since the Valkyries also need time to rest.
The Valkyries will help Olaf fighting on the battlefield as well. He spends rage both for his own skills and to summon Valkyries who can assist Olaf’s units to attack enemies and distract them. E.g. Christa the Valkyrie will throw a handful of gold on the battlefield that will definitely draw the enemies to it, and Hydrida the Valkyrie will summon a meteorite rock with the use of her battleaxe.
Olaf will also visit Darion during his extensive travelling. He will ride into Greenwort, Arland and the Verlon Wasteland, which appeared on the site of the former Verlon Forest. Darion is experiencing hard times now. It looks vastly different due to the undead invasion. What used to be blooming and beautiful has now become dark and gloomy. The Verlon Forest underwent the most change as there is simply no forest there and all the structures were annihilated. It is extremely painful for the Darion dwellers to recall the good old days and they are happy to share their feelings with Olaf.
I played every King's Bounty before, and i loved them all. The newest parth in the franchise is basically more of the same. There are again three different classes one can chose in the beginning. Also there are three skill trees. And it depends on your class, how much of every rune to level those up you get. For example as a Soothsayer you get more magic runes primarly. I played it for over 35 hours now, and i think i've beaten about 75% of the campaign. But sadly it get's pretty boring the longer one plays. Because as i said, it's more of the same..
If you have played King's Bounty: The Legend or King's Bounty: Armored Princess, you will get more of the same, but with a different story. Some of the spells are the same, as well as the characteristics of the hero choices. But overall its a refreshing addition to the series. There are some bugs that are getting squashed with beta updates but you may run into one while you are playing it. I had on particular bug when I was playing it that was causing it to crash on me. Once a new patch came out, I had to restart the game from the beginning to resolve it and the bug didn't reappear. Overall its a fun game and I would recommend it if you like these type of games.
King's Bounty: Warriors of the North is the natural result of a series turn-based strategy acclaimed and successful, a title that in its successful implementation does not aspire to anything new and innovative, offering what has been done by the young Russian in previous episodes. If from the point of view closely play the game is able to offer lots of fun and excellent longevity, the gameplay is a bit 'redundant, supported by a technical department that you could certainly revisit and improve. Curated as always the narrative, rich in content though not particularly original. As with any appointment with the King's Bounty series, we would like to recommend the game to fans of the strategy genre, as well as the role play gamers looking for a good fun diversion.
As a fan of the original series, there are few things that annoy me. First is that for the first 4 islands (at least) your troop selection is very limited, and the enemy is 95% undead, with some bears, snakes and spiders here and there. What made the original game great is that you build your army, and adapt it to a **wide variety of battles**. In the original game, you fought varying armies of neutrals, humans, dwarves, orcs, etc. In the original series, you had to use real tactics to defeat armies. I do not see this too much in this game. Playing it on Hard, the majority of the battles feel way too easy and predictable. There's one ranged undead unit, occasionally a necromancer. I have more or less the same viking army. After 200 battles this gets repetitive. The units are cheap, and before level 15 I have about 400k gold, which I don't remember happening in other titles. My other complaints are poor translation quality, I cannot make sense of some traits (ex: Favorite of the Gods) and abilities. I've seen 1 pirate in 4 islands. Some skills are broken (like the random blessing of witch hunters). Other than that, the game is good, and is worth it.
The King's Bounty series has been the best example of a Heroes of Might and Magic type of game in recent years, each new offering has offered something different and entertaining and this is no exception. As stated by DukePaul this game is more of a stand alone expansion than a full game, but still provides a solid gameplay experience which will keep you entertained for many hours. Currently it is 50% off and I would very much recommend you take the opportunity to pick it up as it is very good value for what you pay for
