Enlist in an intense brand of Axis vs. Allied teamplay set in the WWII European Theatre of Operations. Players assume the role of light/assault/heavy infantry, sniper or machine-gunner class, each with a unique arsenal of historical weaponry at their disposal. Missions are based on key historical operations. And, as war rages, players must work together with their squad to accomplish a variety of mission-specific objectives.
I'm not sure if I should recommend this. I played this one and have a lot of fun, but knowing there is a source version out there that people play more I'm not sure about the purchase of this one. I haven't played the source version, so... But Day of Defeat is a great game, be sure about that. I'm not into multiplayer games and still found lots of good things and hours of fun in this "mod" from Counter-Strike (which was a mod too, yeah, a mod from a mod). Instead of the classic action FPS Day of Defeat is even more tactical than CS. One shot is usually one dead, and firing your weapon is also a way to reveal to other players your location in a game where snipers are waiting for you in every corner. It sounds like a hard game, but it is not that hard, you just got to be extra careful and be extra silent. Actually, there is a stealth element in the gameplay mechanics. The game is fun but it has its own pace. If you take that pace and make it yours you'll find some of the more interesting mechanics ever made in an online FPS video game.
This is one of the original multiplayer WW II games. Even before Battlefield 1942 and Call of Duty, there was Day of Defeat, which started out as a free mod which later became a retail product. You can choose to play either the Allied or the Axis side, and get to use weaponry accurate to the period. You can also choose from one of several classes, similar to Team Fortress, including the rifleman, the staff sergeant, the sniper and the support gunner. You get to engage in combat in different game modes across several different maps featuring areas that were fought in during WWII, and these maps often have different scenarios going on, like the Omaha Beach map, where if you play on the German side, you can fire the big cannon on incoming forces arriving on the beach. There is limited interactivity with items in the world that will help give you the edge against your opponent. DoD is strictly a multiplayer experience. The singleplayer experience is going to be a lonely one, although there are some unofficial add-ons which will introduce bots to the game. This game is also outdated seeing as Day of Defeat Source has long since arrived, and frankly it was never a looker, with dated, ugly graphics and uninspired surroundings right from the start. One of the best bits in my mind is actually the sound, from the sounds of the weapons through to the voice commands that can be shouted. Still, it was fun while it lasted and you might still get some enjoyment out of it today.
This started out as a mod for halflife 1, and it turned into a major full retail release. While most games back in the day did your standard deathmatch, maybe a variation of what counterstrike has, DOD did it a little differently and a little more intuitive based. Instead of just charging ahead and trying to kill everyone, the strategy is to capture strategic points or blow up enemy resources. It's a lot easier said than done, because this game can be very defensive minded with things like deployable machine guns. Most servers put a limit on the number of machine gunners & snipers because they are considered overpowered if there's more than 1 or 2. I, however, got lots of giddy joy sneaking up behind a sniper or deployed machine gunner and whacking them with a shovel. While DoD:S offers everything this does and more, this is still a great classic that you should look at if you get the Valve complete pack.
A close friend got me started playing this around 8 years ago. It was the most fun I'd ever had playing an FPS. What makes this mod shine, is that is primarily very close quarters. You don't have to run 100 miles to find someone. I also appreciated how it didn't take 20 shots to kill you. For a game to have something that close to realism versus what is out there in every other shooter, I found they were ahead of their time. Even at the non-discounted price, this game is worth the price of admission.
