Gamespy.com - Adventure Game of the Year -

"Dreamfall stands so far out of the pack, we believe it would have been a stellar candidate no matter what year it was released". If gaming is ever to be more than merely colored lights and sensation, though, it needs these types of experimental projects to move forward. Gaming may not yet be "art," but with Dreamfall, we're one step closer"

If you need an example of why video games should be considered an art form, Dreamfall is it.

Dreamfall focuses on its diverse characters, and what they have to say. As a science fiction story Dreamfall thrives, with its great and memorable ensemble of characters, voiced to near perfection. Its breathtaking locales and spectacular lighting will engross you. And its captivating plot keeps you enveloped the whole way through. You identify with Zo?, April, Kian, and many of the other characters as well. The emotions conveyed between many of the characters seem very genuine. The gameplay may be weak?but that doesn't stop Dreamfall: The Longest Journey from being one of the most enjoyable experiences you can find, thanks to its remarkable story.

Not bad, but not as good as TLJ

Dreamfall is some kind of sequel to point & click classic The Longest Journey, but as it's featuring totally different character and story it's better to consider it as separate game set up in the same universe. It came out over 7 years after release of TLJ and you can see it right away. It's totally another generation - 3D graphics looks incredibly well, character animation as well, there are much more things you can interact with and more game mechanics avaiable. But with all these additions somewhere along the way it lost the spirit of TLJ. While 3d models are nice, the surroundings are no longer as magical - they are no longer hand-painted and looks just like in any other point & click game. The story is much shorter (takes several hours compared to 20+ hours of TLJ), you visit less locations, meet less characters etc. Puzzles got easier as well - while TLJ had very hard puzzles, Dreamfall is much more casual in that aspect. While there are some more challenging ones, some can be solved at the first try and it's not really something you want from a p&c game. So in conclusion - while it may look much better than The Longest Journey, especially at the first, it's just okayish point and click game, not really worthy to be a successor of one of the most epic journeys in video game history.
