Jagged Alliance 2 belongs to a little group of games called turn-based strategies. As the name implies, you take turns in combat with the ultimate aim of wiping all enemies out. In JA 2, you do so in sectors, reclaiming towns from the grip of the oppressors, freeing up the civilian population to be trained as militia, and the mines which will give you income to hire (more experienced) mercs and better equipment. The graphics were never a selling point for the game, although there are mods out there that improve the resolutions you can play the game in, and perhaps even the overall look of the menus and interfaces you have in the game, as well as weapon and character portraits. Other than that, you’re still playing a game that look like it belongs in 1999. The vanilla sound in the game isn’t particularly good – not the sound effects like gunfire anyway, but once again, with the use of mods, this can be improved drastically. The dialogue, most of which is voiced by at least fairly decent voice actors, is one of the game’s best features. The music is okay but does get a bit repetitive after a time. The AI is challenging, especially on the harder difficulty levels. One thing you might want to check on if you use any of the many mods available for the game, especially the v 1.13 mod, is to check the settings for it, because the AI can be enhanced even more, and this can make the game pretty damn tough. The game is one of the best TBS titles ever made, if not the best. It’s my personal favourite. Add to the fact that the gold version here includes the standalone expansion, Unfinished Business, and that there are *plenty* of mods out there to try it with that really do update it a bit and make it even better than it originally was, and you have no reason for not trying it out if you’re an X-com fan, or you’ve played other Jagged Alliance titles. But even if you’re looking to break into the TBS genre, this is about the best you can do.
This is a nice turn based strategy and tactical game. The graphics are outdated but not so bad and sound is okay. The mechanics and gameplay is solid and stable, the story is nice as well, and there aren't any bugs. It can be addicting too. 7/10.
Jagged Alliance 2 is a good title, a strategic merc simulator with tons of options. Even today, is the best option you can find with a unique gameplay and a lot of characters, each own with unique skills. The fact you can also opt for a realistic setting or a sci-fi one make it a must.
