I remember when I lost hours playing the original ROTT. That's amazing how this new version has a very similar gameplay but with new graphics. Most of the weapons are the same and it is awesome. The sounds are better, but we can switch to the old version sounds. One word to describe it: NOSTALGIC
Look, as much as I dislike the modern shooters, some of their features are there for a reason. Regenerating health for example is something i don't wan't, and don't miss here, but quicksave on the other hand is something that can save you a lot of frustration, especially in such a weird game like this. An enemy shooting me in the face? That Can be expected. A platforming section, and insta death traps? Not if you don't know this game. Ultimately, this game is silly fun, and can be enjoyed, just don't expect it to be user friendly. It's hard, and fair, but not the way other games were in the past 20 years.
Everything I heard from this game was that it is "old school cool" fps. Now, I lived the days of the old school fps games and really liked those games. Also the original ROTT. But this remake, it just doesn't feel right. It feels tacky somehow, pretentious. The level design is unrealistic but in the wrong way. It is trying to give a realistic vibe with the graphic technology but ends up having design choices that leave you wondering what the devs were thinking. Maybe a different look would've helped, cel shading or something. The shooting mechanics are alright, as they should be. Audio is ok. I'll give it a "meh, you can do better".
Rise of the Triad was a 94 First Person Shooter with over the top gunfights and gore all over the place. This remake is just like that (minus the gore). It's the same game but with new graphics, better controls, excellent level design and enjoyable boss fights. Sure the game is rought around the edges but the fun remains the same. Also, it is pretty hard and the scoring system can make play forever.
Tons of secrets, tons of ridiculousness. It's a throwback to the origins of the FPS genre. The team behind it has been constantly supporting it post-launch including tons of free patches. They genuinely seem to give a damn about player experiences, and want you to have fun. It's not an easy game, there's no regenerating health, and it requires planning in addition to jumping in a room and blasting everything that moves. You will gnash your teeth in some areas, but only because you know you could have done it better. The intended audience is generally over 25, people who grew up with these types of games, and want a kick in the nostalgia.
