Play shouldn’t have any limits. When you’re on one platform playing a popular game, you should be able to tap in with your friends across all manner of devices, making it as easy as possible for you all to experience the same great game together. Fortunately for players of Ubisoft’s tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege, some crossplay and cross-progression functionality has recently come to the game.
To demystify which platforms players can currently track progression and support crossplay, we’ve put together this little guide to help you figure out whether you can play with your pals or not, as well as how long you’ll have to wait for full functionality.
Rainbow Six Siege crossplay platforms
According to this helpful article on the Ubisoft website, R6S crossplay is currently supported between PC and Stadia, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
This means that as long as you’re within the same console ecosystem, you can play with your friends, even if they have a next-gen console and you have a current-gen one. The only barrier to crossplay at the moment is between the ecosystems themselves. So if your friends are playing on Xbox, you won’t be able to play with them if you play on PlayStation or PC, and vice versa.
However, Ubisoft does plan to implement crossplay between the console ecosystems in early 2022, so PlayStation players will eventually be able to play with their friends who are on Xbox.
At the moment, there’s no plans to allow PC players to play with those on PlayStation and Xbox, which could be down to the input method. There would be a lot of kinks to work out if you had players playing on controllers against those rocking mouse and keyboard, which is often a more precise method of play in competitive shooter games.
If you don’t want to play with players on other platforms, you will also be able to disable crossplay to stick within the ecosystem you’re playing on when you’re matchmaking.
How does cross progression work in Rainbow Six Siege?
Playing Rainbow Six Siege cross platform means that players can also enjoy cross progression where crossplay is supported. This means PC players can pick up where they left off on their Google Stadia account, and Xbox One/PlayStation 4 players can bring their progression over to the Xbox Series S and X/PlayStation 5 version of R6S if they choose to upgrade to a next-gen console. The only catch is that of course, you’ll have to own the game on the device you want to transfer your progression to, and be signed into the same Ubisoft account.
Much like crossplay, you are currently unable to transfer your progression across the ecosystems. So if you’ve played a lot of PC but want to bring your account to your PlayStation to play with your friends, for example, you’ll have to start fresh. However, Ubisoft plans to launch cross progression across all platforms in early 2022, when it implements crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation.
