The player is called just to play the role of a super creature who has to try to unify the fragments into a single land mass. Who will be able to become the lord of the universe. At the beginning of each world the Master must select a hero to be sent into battle and provide an army. The hero can belong to four different classes: Warrior, Commander, Ranger and Mage, each with their own abilities and each with their own specializations which must be selected after having grown layers. The gameplay is divided into distinct phases. There is an exploratory phase, which is to conquer and explore individual territories. There is a management phase, where you have to build buildings in the capital for new troops for hire, new spells for the heroes and all sorts of other bonuses that are of enormous significance in the unfolding of the game. Finally, there is the phase of actual combat when troops are deployed on the battlefield, divided by the board. Eador is a great turn-based strategy, with a great depth and mechanical properties quite different from the average for the genre. There is unfortunately a certain difficulty interface, with some elements, especially informative, which could be explained better. Still deserves a promotion compared to his older brother and therefore, deserves to be taken into account.
As a fan of both turn based tactical games and turn based strategy games, I found this impressive on both fronts. The tactical aspects are no as dynamic as something like XCOM, however they are still extremely enjoyable and deeper than I have found in games like Kings Bounty or HoMM. The turn based strategy game aspects are also very satisfying. Expanding your capital and managing the happiness of conquered territories is not as deep as something like Civilization V, however there is still some great depth and actually affects the combat more than just which units you can build. The art style is nice on the eyes as well :) Any issues with crashes/freezes have been non existent for me. This game shows the polish of a mainstream studio. Both the graphics and UI are user friendly and the tutorial is extremely helpful in teaching new players to the series (Me) effectively.
This is a great little gem for anyone who likes HoMM, King's Bounty, Crusader Kings etc. kind of games. There's a lot of depth to the gameplay mechanics and the graphics, music and atmosphere in the game is nice. I've played 7 hours into the game so far and have not experienced a single crash or freeze. The devs are comitted to making this game the best that it can be with regular patches so there's no reason not to dive into Eador. I'm happy that I bought the game. On a technical level: game turns can get slow when the AI has two or more heroes going around doing stuff. There are a number of bugs right now that can be very disruptive, though the per-turn auto-save helps ameliorate some of the pain of a crash. Generally I've found that its possible to work around all of the bugs in play except for a crash pinned to a random event that requires you to go back a few turns to re-seed the random number generator. Hopefully this will be fixed soon since there have already been a number of patches in the week since release.
