“A beautiful yet bleak platformer that deals with serious topics while staying lighthearted, On Rusty Trails is easy to recommend for fans of platformers. If Pixar made a platformer, this would be it.”

On Rusty Trails is a modern, illustrative platformer, set in a world constantly reacting to your change in identity. You are Elvis. Home owner, triangular metal person and lover of dryness. A sudden thunderstorm leaves your house dissolved into a pile of rubble. Only lightning-fast reactions will keep you from a looming rusty funeral. Don your Shifty Suit to incognito yourself and and walk among suspicious hairy folk. Perilous puzzles and prejudiced platforms will bar your way in this deceptively complex gaming experience.

On Rusty Trails is a 2D platformer that has you taking the role of Elvis after his house is destroyed by a sudden storm. The story is told through comic style panels with word balloons to show you dialogue or thoughts. Stages have you attempting to reach a life at the end, once you doing so you are shown your time to complete the stage, secret area found, and how many tokens, which are used to activate checkpoints, that you still have with you. The gameplay involves you shifting between your normal rusty self and a blue colored suited version to interact with different kinds of environments. When in your red form blue areas will disappear and water will kill you, when you are blue the blocks will allow you to move on them but you can't move on red blocks. Magnetic boots allow you to run up walls and to walk along ceilings. While the game doesn't do anything that unique it is a fun and well made game with a good art style and a lot of levels. Well worth the price for fans of platformers.
On Rusty Trails is a very well-designed, well-conceived, and polished platformer akin to games such as Super Meat Boy and Dustforce. But the game is a not a copy of those games at all because of it's own unique mechanics to set it apart. For instance, the polarity-swapping lends itself to some very cool platforming setups late in the game, encouraging very nice jump-swap-jump-swap rhythms as you play. The game mechanics of swapping suits and changing the environment around you, plus magnetic boots makes for some great tricky gameplay in short. The controls are tight and fluid in that special way that just feels good to use! The visuals and sounds are akin to Super Meat Boy but are still very nice to look at. One downside is the difficulty, difficulties need a boost because it may not be challenging enough for seasoned veterans of platforming genre. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with On Rusty Trails, it was fun but short.
On Rusty Trails is a platformer from german developper Black Pants Studio where we Elvis, a little red creature who has lost his house (Because of a meteor) and got involved (But didn't want to) in the turmoils of this world. The gameplay is simple. Elvis can disguise himself as one of the blue creatures that live in the upper parts of the world. These creatures love ice, water and cold while the guys like Elvis prefer hotter things. It's as simple as that : using the appropriate appearance will grant you access to certain areas of the levels. To go through a waterfall, you must be blue. To prevent the red people from shooting you, you must be red. It's simple and effective game. It's fun and has a cool art style.
