This is Rockstar at its finest. A lot of effort has gone into recreating the feel, look and sounds of the old West. Take a ride into the wilderness at night and it's hard not to be impressed by its authenticity. The story is engaging and makes full use of the Western setting. John Marsden is an interesting character and I loved seeing the game develop him.
Red Dead Redemption is a third-person western game in the style of Rockstar's GTA franchise. Very story based game with some slow moments both to teach you how to play or to build up character and atmosphere later in the game. The game is open world with much of it being outside of towns, there are a variety of settlements but most are pretty small and unless you are in a story mission offer little more than a place for some activities like playing cards. While the main story is good I found that most of the supporting cast fell flat and that the game reached a low point for some time once you travelled to Mexico, I never really like the main character either. Even with that said it's a rare western title that allows you to explore the world while taking on a variety of side quests and activities. Combat can be enjoyable, as you go through the game you are taught by different gunfighters how to activate a mode to slow time or to quickly mark locations on a target to shoot. Multiplayer was also a good feature with some co-op activities and player vs player modes that started with each team facing off in a quick-draw duel with the opposing gang, though that likely doesn't have much of a population if the servers are even still up.
