EA CFO Blake Jorgensen has stated that EA are not giving up on the micro-transactions in Star Wars Battlefront II, and that purely cosmetic versions would not work for the game.
The controversy surrounding Battlefront II is still ongoing, since EA stated they would bring back micro-transactions at some point, but in an unknown form. Some have hoped that this would be a pivot towards purely cosmetic micro-transactions, similar to Overwatch. However, Jorgensen says that unlike Overwatch, in Battlefront II the items that you buy and unlock affect the gameplay, and therefore couldn’t be purely cosmetic.
As well as this, Lucasfilm has been clear in how they view the altering of iconic Star Wars characters, vehicles and items, “If you did a bunch of cosmetic things, you might start to violate the canon. Darth Vader in white probably doesn’t make sense, versus in black. Not to mention you probably don’t want Darth Vader in pink. No offense to pink, but I don’t think that’s right in the canon.”
Star Wars: Battlefront II is out now.
