New Fable in Development?

Persistent rumours suggest that developer Playground is working on a new Fable game.

Suggestions that work is under way on a new, major Fable game have pinged around the UK developer grapevine for a while now, and website Eurogamer asserts that “sources close to the project” have confirmed its existence. Publisher Microsoft, however, has so far declined to comment.

Eurogamer added that: “The new Fable is planned as a story and character-focused open-world action-RPG.” And it will still be a British-developed game, with Playground, of Forza Horizon fame – which recently established a new studio in Leamington Spa — taking the reins.

In recent years, the Fable franchise has endured some tough times. Less than two years ago, owner Microsoft shut down Fable originator Lionhead Studios, and cancelled the game it was working on, Fable Legends, which was mooted to be a free-to-play, multiplayer-focused take on the RPG franchise.

Eurogamer’s sources say that the new project is in its early stages, so it will probably be a few years before it comes out. However, it’s always good to hear about the return of an old favourite.
