Sea of Thieves closed beta sets sail

Sea of Thieves, Rare Software’s multiplayer pirate-simulator, will enter a closed beta phase at midday today (24 January 2018).

The closed beta – on both PC and Xbox One – will run until 8am on January 29. Although not the full game, it will include most of its “core activities”, as detailed by Executive producer Joe Neate in the video below.

Microsoft has said that the following activities will be included in the closed beta:

  • “Hunting for buried treasure by following maps and solving riddles as part of voyages that span the Sea of Thieves
  • “Sailing solo or joining a crew before heading out to adventure in a shared world where every sail on the horizon is a ship of other real players
  • “Exploring our world and encountering danger on islands, under the ocean and out at sea with fearsome storms and mysterious shipwrecks
  • “Engaging in epic ship battles with cannons blazing, or going head-to-head against other pirates with pistol primed and cutlass drawn”

Plus it said that: “Additional trading companies, quests, progression items, enemies and creatures will all be added before launch.”

As the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Cross Play, Xbox One and PC players will be able to play it together and even jump from platform to platform, picking up their games where they left off. If you’re keen to sample one of the year’s most anticipated games before launch, your best initial port of call is the closed beta FAQ page on the Sea of Thieves website.
