Sega has announced that remastered versions of Shenmue and Shenmue II will be released in 2018 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
Yu Suzuki’s two third-person action-RPGs were hailed as ground-breaking when they originally came out (in 1999 and 2001); the original Shenmue was famously the most expensively produced game at the time, with a budget of up to $70 million. And Shenmue III is currently under development by Ys Net, following a successful crowd-funding campaign.
Sega promises that the updated current-gen versions of Shenmue and Shenmue II will come: “Complete with the original feature set that defined modern gaming, including enthralling jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, and RPG elements in addition to memorable mini-games. This is the definitive version of these all-time classics and will be the best Shenmue experience to date. The re-release will stay true to the originals with modernised features including fully scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface and the option to enjoy either the original Japanese or English voiceovers.”
So far, Sega has only revealed that the remastered Shenmue and Shenmue II will be released: “In 2018”. We’ll keep you updated with any further information as soon as it is revealed.
