Sony and Rovio confirm a second Angry Birds movie

Developer Rovio Entertainment and Sony Pictures have confirmed they are making a second Angry Birds movie.

It is scheduled to hit cinemas on September 20, 2019, and confirmed cast members include Jason Sudeikis, Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad. Thurop Van Orman of Adventure Time will take on directing duties jointly with John Rice (whose credits include King of the Hill and Rick and Morty). John Cohen, who had a producer credit on the first Angry Birds movie, will return to produce the second film.

In a statement, Rovio and Sony revealed that the first Angry Birds movie grossed $352 million at the box-office – a healthy figure that certainly justifies a second movie. It represents good news for Rovio, which has struggled somewhat recently: in February 2018, it published a lower than expected revenue forecast, which caused its share price to halve, and the company subsequently closed its London studio, which had only been in operation for a year.

Rovio could still do with another IP to go with the still hugely popular Angry Birds, although the arrival of a new movie based on the mobile game should boost the latter’s popularity once more.
