Hideo Kojima has particular taste. From Lea Seydoux to Guillermo Del Toro, he’s been adding award-winning talent to his upcoming game Death Stranding for a couple of years now, and as of Tokyo Game Show, we have a newcomer entering the fray.
Despite claiming that he wasn’t going to show any footage, he dropped a tiny teaser to introduce the ‘Man In The Golden Mask’, a character that we’ve actually seen before in previous trailers.
He seems incredibly nefarious, and, crucially, is voiced by Troy Baker, whose credits range from The Last of Us to Persona 4 and God of War.
In the trailer, he pops up out of nowhere to get in protagonist Sam Porter Bridges’ way, using the mask to summon a Bloodborne-esque Lion creature made out of tentacles. Creepy.
We also see Sam (played by Norman Reedus) carrying a woman on his back who many speculate to be Stefanie Joosten who played Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Kojima is a huge fan of Joosten and her uniform bears the Dutch flag, her country of origin, lending credence to the theory.
Gameplay-wise, this is a decided change of pace to what we’ve seen before. Will we be fighting huge boss creatures in Death Stranding? Who knows, but this is another compelling part of the enigma. Hopefully, we’ll hear more at The Game Awards in December, an event Kojima has used in the past few years to debut Death Stranding content.
