Sony has announced that more than 91.6 million PlayStation 4s have been sold worldwide.
Following what it described as a “Strong holiday season,” Sony said: “PS4 has now cumulatively sold through more than 91.6 million units globally as of December 31, 2018. Within the above number, PS4 has sold through more than 5.6 million units globally during the 2018 holiday season.”
John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “We are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones.”
The impressive sales milestone marks the PlayStation 4 as a stunning success, although it still has a way to go if it is to match the PlayStation 2, whose 155 million lifetime sales make it the most successful console of all time. Sony released some other notable PlayStation 4-related figures, revealing that Marvel’s Spider-Man has sold more than 9 million copies worldwide and, as of 31 December 2018, 876 million PlayStation 4 games have been sold worldwide.
Amid speculation that Sony is working to finalise the design and specification of its next console, PlayStation 4 owners have a number of enticing games to look forward to this year, including Days Gone, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and The Last of Us Part 2.
