A popular YouTuber who makes insightful video essays about politics and games raised over $300,000 during a marathon twitch stream of Donkey Kong 64 for the Mermaids Charity.
As well as raising money for charity, HBomberGuy decided to stream the game to spite comedy writer Graham Lineham, who campaigned to disparage some of the charity’s National Lottery funding.
Mermaids is a U.K. charity that was launched to support transgender and gender-diverse children and young people, as well as their families. According to the organisation website, Mermaids campaigns “to raise awareness for gender noncomformity in children” and “lobby’s for improvements in professional services.”
Guests on the stream included legendary game developer John Romero, congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and trans activist Chelsea Manning to name a few. The lineup also included a number of young trans creatives and activists who all brought wonderful insight and education to the audience.
In the end, the playthrough lasted 57 hours and raised a whopping $340,554.71 before the stream ended. A final total has yet to be formally announced, which we imagine could be even more.
If you wish to support this noble cause and you didn’t catch the stream, you can donate on the Mermaids website here.
