Square Enix is having a bit of a celebration of the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game this week. They’re showing off some of the characters you’ll be able to play as in the game, with yesterday focusing an outfit for Captain America based on the Secret Empire storyline from 2017.
Today, however, focuses on the Hulk. You all know the Hulk, Bruce Banner, gamma radiation, gets angry, turns green, hits stuff. You’ve seen the Avengers.
What’s exciting is that for a brief moment in the short clip shown on Twitter, we get to see the Grey Hulk.
What’s the Grey Hulk you ask? Otherwise known as ‘Joe Fixit’, the Grey Hulk isn’t just a lumbering brute full of rage. Much more devious and with an ambiguous moral core, the Grey Hulk emerged in the 1980s as a Las Vegas enforcer and all round tough guy. Other than the colouring of the rage-filled creature, you can tell it’s the Grey Hulk as he’s wearing his trademark 1920s mobster outfit.
Of course the Hulk was originally meant to be grey, with the green colouration only being added due to printing issues with the original run in the 1960s. The grey colour of the original Hulk would become infected with green after printing, so the decision was made to just embrace it and go all in on green.
Whilst these are just skins usable in the game and won’t change the characters abilities or personality, it’s a sign that Square Enix is paying close attention to the history of Marvel, and digging deep for references and other fan-favourite heroes and villains.
Marvel’s Avengers will be released for PC, Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 15, 2020.
