The sixth playable character has been announced for the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers and it’s the redoubtable Ms. Marvel.
Developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers takes up the action after a celebration of everything Avengers goes awry. A-Day, where The Avengers were unveiling a new headquarters in San Francisco, is attacked by the nefarious Taskmaster. The resulting damage and lives lost in San Francisco cause the world to turn away from the Avengers due to the trouble they attract. If you haven’t already, you can check out some of this in the E3 2019 presentation.
The same event, however, created a new superhero. Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. During the event, she becomes “exposed to mysterious Terrigen Mist which gives her her extraordinary polymorphic powers”, as narrative designer Hannah MacCleod informed GamesRadar in an interview.
As a result Kamala Khan gained powers all related to changing her shape, meaning she can have giant fists to pummel foes, grow to huge sizes, and her body is capable of stretching to distant ledges to better traverse the levels.
One key ingredient to making Kamala Khan work in the game is that she’s fairly untrained as superheroes go. All her fighting moves are taken from other heroes, as she’s just copied what she’s been around and seen, albeit with a polymorphic twist to all her moves.
Of course, eagle eyed viewers will have known about the Ms. Marvel reveal for some time, as she was actually narrating the original trailers and was just visible in the Comic Con gameplay footage released earlier this year.
Marvel’s Avengers is nearing the end of its development with a release date scheduled for the 15th of May, 2020, on PC, Google Stadia, PlayStation4, and Xbox One.
