After 12 years of relative silence, Valve is working on a piece of software! No, you’re not dreaming, there’s a new Half-Life game on the way and it’s coming out next year.
Half-Life: Alyx is a prequel to Half-Life 2 where you play as… you guessed it, Alyx Vance, Gordon’s partner in crime. The game is set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2, where Alyx is attempting to rebel against the Combine who have arrived to occupy Earth after the Seven-Hour War.
If the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like her dad Eli Vance has been captured (once again…) and you’ll have to press through a Combine-occupied City 17 to retrieve him. The game has been in development for years now and it looks to fully utilize Valve’s Index headset hardware, including the impressive Knuckles controllers that offer specific finger-tracking. You can see the haptic animations in the trailer as Alyx Vance brushes past paraphernalia on a wooden shelf to grab some ammo.
It looks like the game will involve lots of puzzle gameplay on top of combat and exploration – Valve is billing this as a AAA VR experience, built from the ground up from the platform, so expect some sort of fully fledged game!
Fortunately for VR owners the game is also being built to support every type of HMD, that means even those with Oculus, Vive or Windows Mixed Reality headsets will be catered to with new control schemes and systems to enjoy.
The game currently has a set release date of March 2020, and it’s free if you own an Index headset or even just the accompanying controllers. I can foresee the ending now… Alyx meeting Gordon for the first time, leading in to a full Half-Life 2 remake in VR. Just imagine!
