The Battlefield franchise has always been known for letting you experiment with silly setups such as the C4 jeeps. With the announcement of the Battlefield Portal, the ability to mess about with your mates just got cranked to 11. Let’s take a look at what exactly the Battlefield Portal features are and how players will be able to use them.
Battlefield Portal 101
Firstly and probably most importantly is that the Portal isn’t a map editor and isn’t a modding tool. You won’t be able to create your own Battlefield levels or mod in crazy weapons and other stuff. It is essentially a web tool that allows you to tinker with a set of rules to create your own custom game modes. You want 128 players using only defibrillators, you can do that. You want to pit Battlefield 1942’s weapons and vehicles against Bad Company, you can do that too.
The Portal will provide people with either the option to join custom matches through a server browser or create their own custom game modes using the editor and a preset list of weapons, maps, etc.

A number of maps have already been confirmed to be coming to the Portal with maps from the upcoming Battlefield 2042 release and some classic maps spanning the whole franchise. Those are as follows:-

Battlefield Portal confirmed weapons & vehicles
As well as confirmation on some of the maps to be included, we’ve also had word of some of the weapons and vehicles that will be usable within the Portal.
Weapons such as the M1 Garand, G3, M60, M416 will be included. Whilst the Spitfire, Tiger 1, Quad Bike, VDV Buggy, Little Bird are just some of the vehicles that have been talked about so far.
Furthermore, you will have access to gadgets like C4 charges, Defibs, Radio Beacons and many more.
No doubt that over the course of the Portal’s lifecycle more and more will be added for greater freedom and creativity.
Battlefield Portal Game Modes
The Portal will allow creators to come up with their own fun, interesting and unique takes on game modes. During the reveal we got to see a few creations such as WW2-era vs modern-era, knives vs defibs. There was also a tease of the new dynamic weather events such as the tornado. The possibilities are huge and there will no doubt be some extremely creative game modes when people can get their hands on the Portal. Perhaps a lopsided challenge is more your thing, why not give a squad of four access to all the best equipment whilst the rest of the server have the bare minimum or just melee weapons.
It also seems like you can have bots added to game modes allowing you to create PVE events too.
The Battlefield Portal looks like a real game changer and has the potential to be a huge success for the franchise. We all know people loved Forge in Halo, and the modding communities for many other games are also hugely popular.
