Scarygirl has one of the prettiest and eye catching art designs I have ever seen. It perfectly captures the art style of Nathan Jurevicius, the creator of the character. However, that is all I can really say about the game. The story of Scarygirl is the standard “prophecy in the form of nightmares” one where you go in search of x because of y. Nothing new, but it gets the job done, if only because most video games today need a plot. The gameplay is also standard: a basic platforming side-scroller with some combat and access to gravity defying jumps and abilities. Again, nothing new, and gets the job done, but again, only because most video games. Same with the challenge. Scarygirl is a good game. It plays well and can be challenging at times. However the only thing it does new is its visuals. Those help elevate what might have otherwise been an average game that you have probably played before under a different name.

If you've got proper funds and a skill set to match, you'll have a good time with Scarygirl. While the presentation isn't as top shelf as those nifty stop-motion animated films I mentioned, it definitely holds up compared to other platformers of this nature. And the gameplay is fun too, as long as you don't develop an over reliance to throwing things around.
Scarygirl is not a perfect game and it does have its fair share of flaws, but if you look past them, which I urge you to do, what you will find is a surprisingly solid platformer. It has a wacky story going for it and really interesting graphics paired with good gameplay. The controls however pretty much demands that you use a gamepad, and if you do they are pretty good. However, if you opt to play with a keyboard as I initially did, you will find the game expecting you to have just as many arms as the octopus in the story. At least it felt that way to me. Also the game did not allow me to change resolution properly, but the gameplay made up for it. All in all I really enjoyed the game, and it will provide a couple hours of good fun to anyone who enjoys platformers.
Scarygirl is essentially just a typical platformer, but its use of a visual style similar to the wackiness of Alice: Madness Returns sets it miles apart from every other similar title out there. A unique story and easy controls keep you playing right until the end, but average gameplay may not encourage you to give it more than one or two more goes. Graphically, the game is simply astounding, with different whimsical and fantastic creatures and scenes awaiting you on every level. There's things that are clearly animals, but essentially half-machine, and your character often walks on things that any sane human wouldn't go anywhere near. All this awesomeness doesn't hardly tax your machine, either, so even folks running older machines, so long as they meet the requirements, are good to go. Sound is good, although it somewhat pales in comparison to the visual style. Controls work well, and are your typical platform layout. The story is interesting, but is not something that is overly original. Playing in co-op with the giant rabbit is hilarious, though. The multiplayer community is of a decent size, although finding available co-op partners can be somewhat challenging. Overall, a decent game, but it doesn't have a lot of originality aside from the visuals. Would recommend a buy, but don't expect to be racking up piles of hours in it.
