Blizzard Will Focus Its New Esports Division On Overwatch

Blizzard have created a new division to support Overwatch esports, the game that will be spearheading its esports efforts that started with the acquisition of Major League Gaming (MLG) in 2016.

The MLG division of Blizzard Entertainment will “handle management, operation, sales, and distribution for Overwatch esports programs, including the Overwatch League and Overwatch World Cup.”

MLG will also be the home of the Call of Duty World league, as well as other Blizzard mainstays such as Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Starcraft and World of Warcraft.

Activision Blizzard have announced plans to make the “ESPN of esports”, and CEO Bobby Kotick has set long-term expectations of creating broadcast revenues akin to the NFL or Premier League.
