One of the heads of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, has stated that SEGA is unsure how Sonic Mania will be received by the loyal Sonic Fanbase.
According to NintendoLife, Iizuka spoke at a hands on preview for Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. He voiced concerns on how Sonic Mania will be received. His main concern over the game focuses on Sonic Mania only catering to 2D sonic fans. He mentioned that the games reception will impact future decisions on future sonic games.
“In the past two decades Sonic games have been trying to target a broader audience from kids to adults. And Forces has that same idea, so that means a wider range of characters that we know children like. Even if other fans may not be quite as keen.”
He continued “But for Mania it’s kind of like a new approach. To target specifically 2D fans. So we don’t know whether it’ll be accepted positively in the market. We’ll find out after the game’s released, and we can figure out the direction of future titles after seeing the reaction.”
Sonic Mania will be released on the 15th August for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
