The new version of Minecraft for Windows 10, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch which allows cross play with all platforms, is still unconfirmed for the PlayStation 4.
Mincraft developer Mojang stated in a blog post that “While we are thrilled to be able to confirm the new version of Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch, we are still in discussions with Sony about PlayStation and have nothing to confirm,” They continued “We would love to work with Sony to bring players on PlayStation 4 into this ecosystem as well.”
It has been reported by Gamespot, that the problem may lie with Sony not wanting cross-play with Minecraft. The site referred to an interview between PlayStation executive Jim Ryan and Eurogamer during E3, Ryan stated that “It’s certainly not a profound philosophical stance we have against this,” he continued “Unfortunately, it’s a commercial discussion between ourselves and other stakeholders, and I’m not going to get into the detail of that on this particular instance.”
He went on to discuss Sony’s views about cross platform play saying that “We’ve got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft–the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it’s all ages but it’s also very young,” he went onto say “We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it’s something we have to think about very carefully.”
