Nintendo have announced that their iconic character Mario is no longer a plumber, and according to the company, now focusses on “everything cool.”
Reported by Kotaku, Nintendo have updated Mario’s profile page on their Japanese website. The page says that Mario is no longer doing professional plumbing work, the website now states that Mario is “All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…”
Back in 2010 co-Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto referred to the character as “basically a carpenter” in the original 1981 Donkey King game. In the 1983 Super Mario Bros game a lot of the gameplay took place underground and among pipes so the developers decided that “he could be a plumber,” according to Miyamoto.
Mario’s next big game will be Super Mario Odyssey, which will release for the Nintendo Switch on the 27th October.
