Diablo III Anniversary Darkening of Tristram Event Returns

The event started on January 1 and will continue until January 30. Its format is pretty much the same as that of last year’s Darkening of Tristram 20th anniversary event, although this time around, it will last for longer. Diablo III’s description of it on the official website says: “Your journey begins on the trail of a group of mysterious cultists causing trouble in Sanctuary. As you hunt them down in Adventure Mode, you’ll uncover clues leading to a portal into Tristram’s past, and the terrifying darkness that took hold of the town so many years ago. . . .”

In other words, it provides quite a nostalgia-trip for Diablo III players, keeping the Diablo III engine but employing a visual filter designed to make its graphics resemble those of the original Diablo, and leading up to a battle against Diablo himself. The Diablo III website adds: “Completing activities in the anniversary event yields unique transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits, pets, and more.”

Sadly, Blizzard is remaining tight-lipped about whether or not it is working on Diablo IV. However, in the meantime, Diablo III fans at least have a reason to return to the game before the end of the month.
