Game Critic John ‘TotalBiscuit’ Bain, dies aged 33

After retiring from games criticism at the start of the month, YouTube personality John “TotalBiscuit” Bain has passed away, aged just 33.

Bain’s wife Genna, posted some heavy words following her husbands passing ‘Rest in Peace my Dearest Love’ she says in the caption of her post on Twitter.

He was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer back in 2014 and announced it was terminal in 2015, when it had come back to his Liver and Spine. Despite this Bain continued steaming on his YouTube channel ‘The Co-Optional Podcast.’ He shot to fame with his bold and strident views and professional critiques of games like World of Warcraft,  Starcraft 2 and Planetside 2. He had a total of 2.2 million subscribers and was one of the top Steam curators. He retired from the spotlight just earlier this month to spend his remaining time with his family and with the intention to stream with his wife in hopes that she would take over his channel.

“I fully expect The Co-optional Podcast to go on and I love the thought that once I’m gone, the channels will go on in my absence, hosted by the person who knows me best and has been with me for the better part of my adult life,” he said.

Bain was a colourful and divisive character in the gaming community who throughout his career worked in the name of consumer advocacy. He became embroiled in some controversies throughout his life, including Gamergate and the Framerate Police, and worked to highlight consumer issues such as YouTubers being allegedly paid to promote games and issues related to G2A’s Shield service.

He is survived by his wife, Genna Bain.
