Multiple job listings on Blizzard’s careers site have fuelled speculation that the company is working on a new Diablo game.
Among the job listings is one for a Dungeon Artist which explicitly states: “The minions of Hell are growing stronger…”
We’re working on a new, unannounced Diablo project. Are you a skilled Dungeon Artist? Come work with us, and together we will build something exceptional.”
A listing for a Technical Artist starts the same way, before going on to say: “You will help the environment and prop teams define, create, maintain and streamline the modelling and world-building pipeline and processes to bring to life the world of Sanctuary.” Which strongly suggests that the successful candidate will be working on a new Diablo iteration, rather than a remaster of an existing Diablo game.
According to PC Gamer, Diablo designer David Brevik said last year: “If they do a Diablo 2 Remaster, it’s going to be difficult to make it feel exactly like the same game. They could do it but they will have to go out of their way to ensure that they are simulating the way that the game works in 2D instead of making it 3D, if that makes sense.”
So it’s possible that the major new unannounced Diablo project could be that Diablo 2 remake. However, fans of the revered dungeon-crawler are hoping that it will turn out to be Diablo IV. With 2018’s annual BlizzCon event not due to take place until November 2, there’s every likelihood that the new Diablo game will be announced at next week’s E3 Show. Naturally, we’ll keep you updated with any news as it breaks.
