Snapchat is rumoured to be working on a platform which will allow games to be played on the popular messaging app.
According to a report by The Information, Snapchat parent company Snap is: “Preparing to launch a platform this fall that will let outside developers create games to be played through the Snapchat app, according to two people familiar with the matter. It already has lined up at least one gaming publisher to make a game for the new platform, according to a person familiar with the matter.”
The Information adds that Snapchat declined to comment, and given the unattributed nature of the story, it currently resides in the territory of rumours. However, it makes sense given that the app is locked in a battle for social media supremacy with Instagram, which has recently added features that are similar to Snapchat’s.
In April, Snap launched AR-style games for Snapchat’s animated lenses, called Snappables, which were developed in-house, but last year, the company bought a UK startup called PlayCanvas, which makes an open-source web-based games engine. And Snap company recently rolled out SnapKit, which allows developers to integrate Snapchat’s features into their own apps.
Whether Snapchat users will see games as a desirable addition to the app remains to be seen. We’ll keep you abreast of developments, and you might want to keep an eye on Snapchat’s website.
