A tantalising glimpse of an open-world Harry Potter RPG in development has leaked onto the internet.
The footage of the unannounced game seen below was captured by a participant in a focus group and posted to Reddit by user VapeThisBro. It certainly appears to show open-world movement around a digital Hogwarts, along with plenty of spell-casting.
The leaked footage also came with a purported PR description of the game (albeit with a suspicious amount of spelling mistakes, which we’ve corrected), which can be found in full in the same Reddit post. It opens: “Set in the 19th Century (1800s) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has earned a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You are a newly arrived 5th-year student to Hogwarts that demonstrates a latent gift for magic with a unique ability to track and identify remnants of a potent ancient power. Upon arrival, strange events begin to materialize In the Forbidden Forrest and trouble begins to brew within the castle walls. Together with Professor Elezar Fig, you embark on a journey through both familiar and never before seen locations to bring to light the truth behind these mysterious occurrences.”
It has long been rumoured that Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, which now owns the rights to JK Rowling’s much-loved wizarding franchise, has been working on a major new Harry Potter game. And despite the extensive nature of the leak, there remains some debate as to who might be developing it. VG247 reckons it is being made by ex-Disney Infinity dev Avalanche Software, whereas Gamebyte believes London studio Rocksteady, of Batman: Arkham fame, is on the case.
We hope that the latter, which has been very quiet since Batman: Arkham VR, is indeed making the Harry Potter RPG, since it is renowned for making a string of fine games. We’ll bring you any more news as it emerges.
