Electronic Arts has announced that it is working on a remastered Command & Conquer game for PC.
It made the announcement in a very low-key manner: via a post on Reddit. in which EA producer Jim Vessella said: “As most of you may know, we recently announced Command & Conquer: Rivals, a mobile game set in the Command & Conquer universe. Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command & Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC. And as a fan of C&C for over 20 years, I couldn’t agree more. With that in mind we’ve been exploring some exciting ideas regarding remastering the classic PC games, and already have the ball rolling on our first effort to celebrate the upcoming 25th Year Anniversary.”
That reveal was about as short on detail as possible – it is by no means clear which Command & Conquer game will be the first to receive a modern makeover, nor whether it will see the user interface improvements introduced in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. However, given that the first instalment of the franchise will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2020, it would be reasonable to assume that would be the first to receive the remaster treatment.
Vessella added: “Ten years ago I had the pleasure of being on the production team for Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3, along with being the Lead Producer on Kane’s Wrath. We are eager to hear your feedback to help influence our current thoughts for PC and what comes next. Over the next few weeks we’ll be talking to fans in a variety of ways.”
The last proper instalment of the much-loved (and once huge-selling) real-time strategy franchise was 2010’s Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. So it is thoroughly overdue for a comeback. You might want to keep an eye on EA’s website for further news.
