The Pokemon Company in collaboration with Legendary Pictures has dropped the first trailer for Detective Pikachu, the live-action movie adaptation of the game that shares its name.
Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds stars as the titular Pikachu, who appears unannounced in the life of a young man trying to unravel the mystery of his father’s passing.
Directed by Shark Tale’s Rob Letterman, the movie is most interesting for its use of live-action visuals.
The Pokemon shown in the trailer include a textured and scaly Charizard, a slimy-looking Greninja, and a particularly perturbed Psyduck covered in real feathers.
Whilst the premise and visual style is very impressive, it’s also considerably ‘marmite’ for fans, who are unsure about the uh… slightly horrifying depictions of fan-favourite pocket monsters.
The star of the show is easily the wise-cracking Pikachu, whose gags can only be heard by the protagonist, with civilians hearing the far easier to stomach ‘Pika Pika’ in public.
Ken Watanabe plays Detective Yoshida, a friend of the protagonist’s father, with Bill Nighy and Rita Ora appearing in as-of-yet unannounced roles.
The feature film is currently pegged for a release on May 10 2019, so we won’t have to wait too long to unravel the mystery with the unlikely detective duo.
