A K-Pop band consisting of virtual League of Legends characters has topped the Billboard World Digital Song Sales charts.
Beating out “Tempo” by EXO and even the inimitable “Fake Love” by blockbuster boy band BTS, this virtual girl group is not to be trifled with.
“Popstars” by K/DA is currently sitting pretty at 62 million views on YouTube and is steadily approaching the most viewed video on the channel. This is just another of its accolades after topping the World Digital Song Sales charts.
The video stars League of Legends characters Ahri, Akali, Evelynn and Kai’Sa, voiced by members of a popular South Korean group ((G)I-dle) and American vocalists Madison Beer and Jaira Burns.
The point of the video was just to promote an in-game event, with the character skins used in the video available for fans to buy.
Clearly it has overwhelmed expectations, with fans going wild on social media, drawing fan art and celebrating this incredible piece of marketing.
Now that it’s topping actual music charts, perhaps we’ll see an EP from K/DA, or hell, even a whole album. Perhaps they’ll be the next Gorillaz, or even Hatsune Miku! The demand is certainly there.
