In a day dominated by news from Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo had to creep in right at the end of play with some Persona news that we never saw coming.
In the wee hours of the morning, UK time, a video was stealth dropped by Nintendo detailing the 3.0 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update and the details behind the first DLC character coming to the game, Persona 5’s Joker.
To run down the main points of the bumper 15-minute video, Joker’s entire move-set has been revealed, as well as his accompanying stage, Mementos. Persona fans will be pleased to know that the stage shifts between the latest three Persona games, 3, 4 and 5 as you play, with accompanying music and aesthetic.
Joker has a gun and uses his down special to charge his persona Arsene, who he can unleash to protect him and buff his attacks. He looks like a very mobile character with great recovery, and his design is wonderfully attuned to his original Atlas design. Morgana the cat will even appear when you taunt, and Kirby dons Joker’s mask when he gobbles him up. How cute!
Outside of phantom thief news, Nintendo also revealed DLC Mii Fighter outfits for Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog and both the Persona 3 & 4 protagonists, as well as a suite of new features for the wider game.
These include a fully fledged stage builder that lets you draw out platforms with the touchscreen, a video editor, and a social service called Smash World where you can share the best clips from your battles.
Despite being brilliant at launch, Ultimate’s post-launch content keeps bringing more features to the game, polishing an already shiny gem.
Here’s hoping we hear more about the next DLC character soon, as internet speculation runs wild. Some think it may be Banjo Kazooie, given the appearance of a witch in the stage builder clip that looks like Banjo antagonist Gruntilda. A clever tease or just a coincidence? I guess we’ll find out as we approach E3.
