Netflix has revealed it is developing a Magic: The Gathering animated series with Wizards of the Coast, and they aren’t skimping in the talent department.
The Russo Brothers have announced their next project, and it’s not what you might have expected! Straight off the back of the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame (a worldwide gross of 2.8 billion dollars so far!) the duo are taking their talent to a different property rooted in fantasy.
Anthony and Joe Russo are apparently massive fans of the trading card game, which is going to help as they take up responsibility on the project as executive producers. “We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” a statement from the dynamic duo reads.
The series will apparently follow the ‘Planeswalkers’, the protagonists of the Magic world who are prone to in-fighting. According to Polygon, the team behind Rick and Morty, Teen Titans Go! and cult hit The Dragon Prince will be handling animation duties for the Magic series.
The lead writers have been found in Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina, with credits between them ranging from Star Wars: Rebels & The Clone Wars to The Tick, and the show will also feature Yoriaki Mochizuki of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse fame as supervising director. Quite the pedigree indeed!
The card game and its surrounding lore is now over 25 years old and has a gigantic global fanbase – perhaps this show will also sweep TV junkies looking for their next fantasy fix. Magic: The Gathering is most likely looking to fill the void left behind by Game of Thrones – likewise with Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series and Netflix’s other in-development fantasy show, The Witcher.
