E3 2019: Gears 5 to release September 10 with 3-player co-op


At its E3 2019 press conference, Microsoft announced that Gears 5 will be released on September 20, 2019, and revealed a wealth of detail about the third-person shooter.

Rod Fergusson, Studio Head at Gears 5 developer The Coalition, stepped up to talk about the game, saying: “We’re excited to announce that Gears 5 is releasing on September 10. And if you want to play four days early, you can, with our Ultimate Edition or membership of the newly announced Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In July, join us for our Versus Multiplayer tech-test, where you’ll be one of the first to play our all-new competitive gameplay, Arcade.

“In August, at Gamescom, go hands-on with the all-new Horde Mode and see how character abilities can turn the tide on the battlefield. Today, here’s a brand-new way to fight the Swarm. In Escape, you play as one of three hive-busters. You and your squad infiltrate the hive, plant the bomb and escape with your life.”

After the E3 press conference, Microsoft described the new Escape mode (as seen in the above trailer, as: “An aggressive, high-stakes, three-player co-op mode featuring a suicide squad that must work together to take out enemy hives from within.” It added that gamers can: “Preorder or play with Xbox Game Pass by Sept 16, 2019, to get The Terminator Dark Fate Character Pack, which adds the Terminator T-800 Endoskeleton and Sarah Connor from the upcoming film “Terminator Dark Fate” as playable multiplayer characters.”

A wealth of information about Gears 5 can now be found on its page on Microsoft’s website. It will include five game modes: Escape, Campaign (playable by up to three people co-operatively), Versus (including: “10+ other game types, new and classic maps”) Horde and a Map Builder mode which will allow players to create custom Escape scenarios.

Gears 5 will have four playable characters: Kait Diaz, Del Walker, Marcus Fenix and JD Fenix. It will also let you play as Jack, as described by Microsoft: “Play as Jack, your personal flying support bot that can protect allies and damage enemies – perfect for players new to Gears.”
