Monster Hunter Live-Action Movie Footage Leaks

Monster Hunter World Movie

Some sneaky Capcom fan at the Shanghai International Film Festival has leaked the behind-closed-doors teaser for the upcoming Monster Hunter live action movie.

The 30-second clip is quite something, flashing between Milla Jovovich and Ron Perlman as they “discover a new world” full of dangerous dinos and beasts.

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (who previously worked on the Resident Evil adapted movie series,) the Monster Hunter movie is set for release in 2020 and will follow a “United Nations military team” who fall into a portal to an “alternate dimension where humans fight off giant monsters” and act to stop them invading Earth.

Not quite true to the source material, but if you’re a fan it looks cool at the very least. The outfits and weapons seem authentic, as do the monsters like the surging Diablos and that awesome Rathalos tease near the end.

The movie was shot in and around Cape Town in South Africa with a whopping $60 million budget. After the runaway success of Monster Hunter: World this past few years (Capcom’s best selling game!) an accompanying movie is an easy win, especially if it doesn’t do a disservice to the spirit of the series.

As well as Jovovich and Perlman, martial arts specialist Tony Jaa, of Ong Bak and Furious 7 fame, and rapper and actor T.I. have joined the cast, fleshing out a band of heroes ready to take on gargantuan beasts.

It’s still up in the air as to whether the combat will look silly or not – Monster Hunter is all about dexterity as characters flip around the backs of beasts with insect glaives and giant hammers – but the tone of the trailer is certainly quite promising. I’m not sure if this is the movie that will break the game adaptation curse, but it’s trying its best, ok?
