Cyberpunk 2077 to have multiplayer, CD Projekt Red developing sequel

Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer and sequels

CD Projekt Red has revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a multiplayer element, and that it is working on another as-yet-unannounced game set in the Cyberpunk universe.

Talking to Polish website Bankier (via Google Translate), CD Projekt Red Vice President Piotr Nielubowicz told Bankier that three development teams are working on Cyberpunk projects, one of which – a studio based in Wroclaw staffed by 40 people – is: “Associated with work on the multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077.” It was previously reported that CDPR were working with Multiplayer studio Digital Scapes on this.

Nielubowicz also told Bankier: “Our next big project will also be in the Cyberpunk universe, and we’re already working on it and treating it as a really big and innovative project.” Which represents both good and bad news for fans of CD Projekt Red’s games, since it means that the developer is unlikely to have sufficient bandwidth to also start developing another Witcher game right now. This second Cyberpunk game could be launching as soon as 2021 if they still plan to stick to their plans of releasing two AAA RPG titles by that year.

Nielubowicz’s very brief comments to Bankier shed no light whatsoever on what form Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer side might take – until now, CD Projekt Red has only revealed the single-player game. But speculation is mounting that it may well take a similar form to Red Dead Redemption 2’s Red Dead Online multiplayer element and, like Red Dead Online, may be released at a later date than the single-player game.

If Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer element takes the typical modern form of a game-as-a-service, it will require some form of monetisation, so it could be made available as paid-for downloadable content, or as a free-to-play element backed by loot boxes and/or microtransactions.

The (first installment of) Cyberpunk 2077 is due to be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on 16 April 2020. Your likeliest source of further revelations about the game’s multiplayer side, as well as future Cyberpunk games, is the news section of CD Projekt Red’s website.
