The studio behind Cuphead, Studio MDHR, has delayed its hotly anticipated DLC to 2020 in order to preserve a sustainable development process. If you’ve beaten the game and were left begging for more, you’re probably wise to ‘The Delicious Last Course,’ a DLC pack that was initially planned for 2019.
The developers explained the decision in a blog post on the Xbox Newswire, with co-director Chad Moldenhauer laying out the reasoning behind the delay.
“Our highest priority is making sure this new adventure meets the meticulous level of care and quality we always strive for. We want to be absolutely certain that this next adventure feels at home in the world of Cuphead and is full of moments that surprise and delight players.”
As well as making sure it’s to the standard Studio MDHR want it to be, Moldenhauer made clear that this was also a decision that would benefit the health of the team, and ensure a positive working environment given their experience developing the base game.
“Furthermore, the development of the original game taught us a great deal about the importance of making things in a way that’s healthy and sustainable for our team… This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but we’re confident it’s one that will result in a higher quality experience that’s all the sweeter when it does arrive.”
The add-on content includes a completely new area with brand new bosses, weapons and charms, but its most interesting addition is an entirely new character in Ms Chalice, a female Cuphead who can double jump and be played across the entire game, not just the forthcoming DLC.
To whet the appetite of fans, Studio MDHR has dropped a teaser trailer for The Delicious Last Course which runs through some of the major new features coming to Cuphead.
It’s a high-octane vignette full of swing jazz and dangerous platforming, as well as some scary-looking new bosses for you to agonize over. Whilst fans might have to wait a little longer for more Cuphead, rest assured it will be developed in a healthy environment and delivered with care when it’s ready.
