Quirky, innovative colony-building-cum-coding game Autonauts has been released today on PC.
Developed by Denki and published by Curve Digital, Autonauts is the brainchild of ex-DMA Design creative director Gary Penn and technical director Aaron Puzey. Its unique gameplay involves colonising fertile alien worlds from scratch, with the help of robot assistants which must be programmed to perform complex tasks – a process that involves teaching players the basics of coding.
Curve Digital said that Autonauts is the: “Most wishlisted title in the publisher’s history, proving that gamers worldwide are looking for this kind of colourful, creative and intellectually stimulating experience.” And it added: “Autonauts’ launch on Steam marks the game’s evolution into a full 1.0 release and features a fully-fledged campaign mode, a complete audiovisual makeover, massively expanded research possibilities utilising the love economy, built-in Autonautopedia wiki, achievements and lots more to play with including transportation, animal husbandry, mix ‘n’ match multipart bots and more!”
Autonauts blocky appearance and determination to allow its players to indulge their creativity have led to comparisons with Minecraft. Curve Digital described Autonauts various game modes: “Players are free to explore their creativity in Colonise Mode which introduces all the game’s different components step-by-step, Free Mode where all structures are unlocked straight away and Creative Mode where players have unlimited resources to build the off-world colony of their dreams.”
Autonauts is available now on Green Man Gaming and Steam. Autonauts was partly crowd-funded via itch.io, and all those who donated $20 or more during its pre-alpha stage will be rewarded with a free Steam key to download the final game. For more information, visit Autonauts’ website.
