The yearly GuardianCon charity stream has recently ended, and the final figure has inched over the $3.7 million mark, all in aid of charity.
That charity in question is the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee. The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a paediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases, such as leukemia and other cancers.
Originally started by Ben ‘ProfessorBroman’ Bowman, Cory ‘KingGothalion’ Michael, and Kevinxvision, GuardianCon has grown from a small charity stream to an annual community event that draws thousands of viewers, both online and in-person in Orlando, Florando.
Staff from Destiny 2 developers Bungie attended the event, raising around $400,000 during their time on stream for the St. Jude hospital charity. This amount surpassed several stretch goals which now mean Bungie community manager Dylan ‘dmg04’ will be getting a tattoo, and cosplaying as bread.
The final stream, run by Ben ‘DrLupo’ Lupo, received the most donations. During his time streaming during GuardianCon he raised the colossal amount of $920,343.98. As the final total rolled in during the closing moments of his stream, DrLupo said “Thank so much to every single person that’s donated, to every single person that’s supported St. Jude, I’m gonna sit here in my chair and cry for a little bit.”
As posted on Dexerto, you can watch the moment DrLupo realised how much the community has raised for the St. Jude charity right here:
St. Jude’s PLAY LIVE charity – a gaming charity supporting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – tweeted out its support in recognition of the staggering amount raised by the charity stream.
The GuardianCon official event will be held between the 5th and 6th of July, 2019, in Orlando, Florida.
